Conditions characterized by the depression of the immune system, such as anemia and leukemia have been associated with long term exposure to benzene.  If you or a loved one has a benzene related illness or has died because of a benzene related illness, you may be entitled to compensation.  Contact the Law Offices of Carabin & Shaw right now.

Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia (CML) - also known as chronic granulocytic leukemia. Chronic myelogenous leukemia is characterized by a rapid growth of the blood forming cells in bone marrow, blood, and body tissue resulting in bone marrow failure. Symptoms include fever, bone pain, fatigue, and enlarged spleen.

Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL) - a condition defined as an accumulation of abnormal lymphocytes in the blood and the bone marrow. These lymphocytes do not perform their functions normally and interfere with the production of other blood cells necessary for normal blood function.  Complications resulting from impaired blood function include deficiency of the immune system, coagulation problems, swollen lymph nodes, and a host of other conditions.

Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia (ALL) - known as acute childhood leukemia.  ALL is characterized by an accumulation of immature white blood cells in the vascular system and is a malignant cancer.  The malignant cells replace bone marrow over time resulting in a loss of normal blood cell function. A few of the symptoms of this disease can include prolonged bleeding, bruising, skin rash, fatigue, bone pain, and weight loss.

Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma (NHL) - also known as lymphocytic lymphoma, histiocytic lymphoma, and lymphoblastic lymphoma. It is a malignancy of the lymphatic tissue (lymph nodes, spleen, etc.). Often, the first sign of a non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma is a painless swelling of a lymph node in the neck, armpit or groin. Other symptoms include fever, weight loss, excessive sweating and persistent itching all over the body.

Multiple Myeloma is a cancer of the plasma cell, where large numbers of abnormal plasma cells, myeloma cells, are produced. These fill up the bone marrow interfering with production of normal white cells, red cells and platelets. The myeloma cells usually produce a large amount of one type of abnormal antibody. This antibody cannot fight infection effectively and often reduces the production of normal antibodies. Symptoms of this disease include renal failure, lower back or rib pain, excessive lethargy, and recurrent infections - especially chest infections.

Myelodysplasia (MDS) – also known as Myelodysplastic Syndrome- refers to a group of disorders where the bone marrow does not function as normal, producing immature blood cells. MDS affects the production of any, if not all, of the types of blood cells. MDS can be categorized in one of five categories: refractory anemia, refractory anemia with ring sideroblasts, refractory anemia with excess blasts, refractory anemia with excess blasts in transformation, and chronic myelomonocytic leukemia. MDS almost always affects persons over age 50, and is frequently asymptomatic until the disease is in its advanced stages.

Secondary Aplastic Anemia - sometimes known as acquired aplastic anemia.  Secondary anemia is characterized by the failure of the bone marrow to form enough blood cells. It is defined by a reduction in all types of blood cells. Symptoms of this disease include fatigue, shortness of breath, weakness and rapid heart rate.
